I just installed AOE2 and the Conquerors expansion on a Win 8 system. Now the game won't start with the AOE2 disk (duh) but when I start with the expansion disk it says I need to change to the expansion disk and restart. Any ideas?

A lot of older games need you to install DX9, which does not come by default with Win7/8 if I remember correctly from installing legacy games,

Windows DX 9 runtime DL you may need. This may or may not be the reason, but worth looking in to.
Is there any other error message?
Also you MAY need to right click the laundher icon and select "run as admin" or "run in compatibility mode"
Have you tried any of these?

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I have DX9. I tried running as admin and every compatibility mode, to no avail. The game would start using the second disk, but when I clicked on a game option at the main menu it would say I had the wrong disk. Another suggestion worked. Thank you for your help.

Win 98 is not one of the options for compatibility mode. It will only allow me win 7/8, Vista, or XP. I did shut down the task explorer and that solved my issue. Thanks.
