I can't find the PCI Latency timer in the Gigabyte Z87 HD3 Bios. I checked every single tab and looked up the manual online, and I could find nothing about it. I'm trying to potentially fix driver crash issues. Thank you!

Solution

Try the latest Beta drivers that can be found on Creative's support site. They've been known to fix obscure bugs several years after they are discovered.

Are you using any PCI devices?

The PCI latency timer simply restricts how long a particular device can hold the bus for. Well behaved hardware should be able to handle having its bus access revoked and the drivers should also handle this properly. What PCI device do you have installed that's causing problems?

I'm pretty sure it's my sound card. When I boot up the PC, the little startup song cuts off and doesn't play all the way. Also, and more seriously, often times when I play games they'll freeze and the sound will just go crazy and then the screen turns black, prompting me to reboot. I read that a possible solution was to change the PCI latency timer, so I'd like to see if that helps.

If it's a Creative Labs sound card I would not be surprised about bugs, but the most likely cause is in the drivers, not the firmware settings. Creative Labs is known for having absolutely terrible drivers; their PCIe drivers have improved recently, but their legacy PCI products have been depreciated and no longer receive support.

I do have a Creative X-Fi sound card. Should I try to install the latest drivers for it, or should I remove them completely?
