Trouble with the wireless

I recently installed a windows 8 x64 OS on a junked Gateway M-6804m. Notebook It used to have windows vista x64 on it. My question is, how or what do I do to get the wireless back? It has a switch on the side, in which I already switched to "on". Doesn't detect wireless at all.

That's because there is no Windows 8 driver for it.
Gateway do not support Windows 8 on that laptop model, meaning they have never released any Windows 8 drivers for it.

Could you please tell me what would be the latest x64 OS for that model & what would be the correct drivers for the wireless adapter?

I doubt you are going to be able to find a wireless driver that supports Win 8 on that Gateway. I would bypass it with a USB WiFi adapter, which will include a driver. They are cheap and small.
