Hello all. I am trying to install windows 7 via USB and I am having a very hard time. It will go through the first several steps and then tell me it needs to restart. After restarting I have seen several different behaviors.
Sometimes it attempts to continue and just freezes on the " completing Installation" step. The screen is frozen and the mouse pointer is stuck in the top left corner. Other times it tells me there was an error, restart the pc and restart installation. Most recently I have been getting a solid black or light blue screen immediately after seeing the windows logo and the "updating registry" message.
I read some posts here and discovered that the light blue screen doesn't happen if I unplug the mouse and keyboard dongle after I start the installation. It was also suggested that I remove everything besides VGA which I have done. I am still getting a mix of the other 3 errors. If it matters the SSD is plugged into the first Sata port on the mobo, labelled Sata1.

I have attempted the install using 2 different copies of windows 7, downloaded from digital river and burned using 2 different programs. They both get the same errors.

Here is the hardware:
Asus M4a88t-m le
Kingston 240gb SSD

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have windows installed on any HDD/disk you have? Try copying some files onto SSD. If it doesnt copy, your ssd could be broken. Otherwise, try to erase whole SSD disk and try again, and try setting SSD disk as the first boot option in bios, or just try installing windows from CD/DVD.

Thanks for the reply. Ill test the SSD today and then try again. I have the SSD set as the first boot option. The machine doesn't have an optical drive but I guess I can install one if all else fails.

When you install the optical drive, set it as a first boot option and try installing from disk. Just for the info, do you have sucessfully choosen install directory(SSD)? Data system type might be MBT instead of NTSF so you need to convert it, or try changing SATA port.

Just to keep you updated, I replaced the ssd with a hdd and used a usb that I successfully installed windows with on a different machine, and i got a different/worse error. it now freezes before the windows install even begins. I am going to try again with one stick of ram at a time and see if that makes any difference.

Maybe you got some usb issues, or SATA port issues? Maybe malware, viruses? or just your mobo.
