Can't set Nvidia 780m as default graphics card

I have a problem that I have noticed a number of people have written about but I just can't seem to find a solution. So I have a custom laptop with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 780m and a Intel 4800mq, and it usually runs fine. However I have problems when I'm playing games where it uses pretty much only my CPU for running the game and barely utilizes my actual GPU. In some cases it works fine when I press run with graphics processor > high-performance Nvidia processor. However it doesn't always, and it is especially a problem with games that have a launcher, so pretty much any MMO. I have tried to go into the NVIDIA control panel and change my preferred processor to my Nvidia card, and press apply, but then as soon as I quit the control panel and go in to check if it is actually set, it has reset to auto-select. I have tried with individual games, and the same thing keeps happening.

I have heard it may have to do with optimus or whatever, but when it doesn't switch to my GPU till the CPU is essentially burning cause it thinks it can handle it way better than it actually can then my computer just becomes unstable and starts stuttering and eventually either freezes and crashes, then it's a problem. And I have checked with a number of things which one it is actually utilizing and 9 times out of ten it uses the CPU pretty much all the time and my GPU barely does anything. And it's not like I'm only playing solitaire, it's Watch Dogs, Assassin's creed, Star Wars the old republic etc. And I know my CPU won't be able to handle it for long. So is there any way to manually change the settings for optimus, or is there some other solution?

So I got it from ibuypower, a Valkyrie CZ-15, which is basically a change MSI GT 60 without the extra SSD and other unnecessary extras. It has:
CPU: Intel i7 4800mq
RAM: 16GB
GPU: nvidia gtx780m
Storage: 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD
Operating system: Windows 8
I think that's all you'd need to know, I have updated all the drivers, cause whenever I tried to go back it usually resulted in even worse results...
