Hi,

I have an old PC that I've been using it for about 12 years. It has a MSI motherboard, AMI bios, and geoforce Graphic card, geforce4 mx 440 with agp8x .
It was working fine until last year, when suddenly started to crash. After a while I understood it happens when I set resolution higher than 640. So the only ways I can work with the computer is the Safe Mode and VGA Mode. Otherwise the monitor suspends and keyboard won't work, sometimes it'll reboot after a while. In any case I don't get any kind of error message, else than on every boot, including VGA Mode, I get the 'The LoadUserProfile call failed with the following error: Incorrect function.' event .

Please note that I didn't have any hardware or software change. I updated anything, MSI Live Update says that I'm on the latest versions and I managed to download '93.71_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql_2' driver, but none actually worked. The device appears to work fine in the device manager.
I have also uninstalled the driver and tried windows default driver which was useless.
This problem exist with both Windows XP, and 7. I don't have to say that I've scanned for malwares and already tried clean install.
I've tried the monitor on my own laptop and it was on its usual 1280 resolution.

I wonder if you can suggest anything? My limitation is that I don't have any additional replacement equipment to try, and I really need to repair this old PC with the least possible change since it's not mine.

Thanks in advance,

Have you opened the PC and cleaned out any accumulated dust / debris inside it with a cannister of compressed air or a thin-nozzle vacuum (being very careful)?

The Graphics Card might be overheating due to dust / debris buildup.

It's also possible the Graphics Card has 'crept' out of its slot slightly as the silicon expands and contracts as it heats and cools from repeated use. Press down firmly on the card when you're inside the case.

At 12 years old it's most probably a hardware problem assuming you've been taking appropriate virus / malware precautions.

Thanks for your comment, but it didn't work. Any other possible solution?
It seems the system goes into some kind of halt state, fans speed down, ... .

Does the Graphics Card work in Safe Mode?

You could try removing the driver via Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Display Adapters > Right-Click GPU and select 'Properties' > Click 'Drivers' Tab > Select 'Uninstall'.

Reboot into Safe Mode and install the above '93.71' drivers. Reboot again.

Beyond that the only clear diagnosis would be to test the card in a different machine to rule out component failure.

Well, even though I've tried that before but since I don't remember well, I gave it another try.
Something strange happened. After the uninstall, I reboot into the VGA mode but I got an error message on a blue screen that I couldn't manage to read and system rebooted quickly.
It couldn't recognize the HDD, primary master, anymore. I went into setup menu and it was very slow, so I shut it down and after turning it on, it found the HDD.
Now, I can't run on VGA mode and windows will reboot itself. Safe mode won't work neither, it went into a long halt before restarting itself. I can only come up with normal boot.

I have several drivers for this graphic card. Windows' driver didn't work and it kept a yellow icon beside it in the computer management.
On installing updated drivers that I've downloaded from geforce website the screen went black and keyboard stopped working. In another try monitor slept.

I restart it in both case. First time driver wasn't successfully installed and the second time the usual thing happened, it crashed and colors got mixed.

Did you get any idea with these comprehensive explanations!? Specially about that hard disk part.
