Hello, i am having trouble with my downloading speeds, when i am trying to download games from steam, or files from my browser, i get my downloading speed dropped to about 150 kbps, and my downloading speed is limited to 1.9 Mbps when its not dropped, this never used to be the case, i used to get 5.3 Mbps for a while then it would drop sometimes to the same (150 Kbps) how can i fix this,i know for a fact that this shouldn't be happening, my phone downloads a absolute minimum of 1.2 Mbps , which for my oldish phone i think is fine, but this is not what i want for my PC, how can i fix this.

Specs/Devices.

CPU: Intel Xeon Quad core cpu (x5355) @ 2.66GHz

GPU: AMD Radeon R7 250 2gb DDR3 (MSI OC edition)

RAM: 8GB

OS: Windows 7 home premium (64bit)

WiFi Adapter: USB Wireless network connection TL-WN725N_TL-WN723N (TP-Link)
Wireless mode: 802.11g

P.S: I suspect it to be a problem with my computer maybe, other devices work fine.

*Update*
Great, now my maxium internet download speed is dropped to 1.4 from yesterday.

Solution
Since you are sharing a connection then there are a lot more reasons - Other people using the internet would be a typical reason to see slow down. You can try a few things like changing the Wifi channel which may (or may not) help, or moving your machine onto a static IP address.

The problem is for sure not your hardware.

First place to look is your wireless network. Wireless is very susceptible to interference and weird performance problems. A far better idea would be to use a wired connection to your router.

Also, try resetting your router. Routers sit online 24/7 and overtime they can get a bit weird, and restarting them can restore them to normal.

I have my router offline every night before i go to sleep, so i don't think its that, and i would prefer a wired connection my self too to be honest, but that's can't happen right now due to arguments with my mother about wires running around the place, she won't listen to me.

How about moving onto a static ip, could that help much? if so can you show me how i could do this possibly? :)

Thank you, i guess i got some add speed on to my internet, my download max limit is now 4.7 Mbps, but it still goes down after downloading 390 mb of data, or maybe that's just steam doing it, what made things better was the static ip.

There's a number of factors that can contribute to networking performance. Static IPs are generally better and more stable for machines that connect from the same place on the network every time.

While I can't really say without looking, I'd hazard a guess that your router is trying to balance load and usage between different addresses in it's DHCP table, essentially it's trying to be 'fair' about who get's to use the bandwidth among the devices. Moving to an IP outside of the DHCP range could reasonably put you outside those restrictions. But it really is just a guess.

If you continue to experience problems then you'll need to look a little harder at your router to find the solution. Especially if it was provided by your ISP it could easily be doing some kind of throttling across the whole network based on their 'fair use' guidelines, or because you are using an application that it automatically throttles (BitTorrent is typically the one they will focus on).
