Hi my brother has a laptop that i'm going to put linux on. It has 2 gb of RAM and a Pentium T2330. What would be the best Linux to put on it? It is currently running Vista, do i need to completely get rid of Vista or do i need it on the laptop?

Distributions that run lightweight window managers/desktop enviorments will be best.

LXDE, XFCE, openbox+tint2rc, etc..

Lubuntu, Xubuntu, crunchbang... Are good distributions to start looking at

You do not need vista and in fact it is probably undesirable to keep on the hard drive at all. You can safely overwrite it.

If the machine was running Vista then it can run Kubuntu with KDE4 without any problem. Kubuntu has similar layout and behavior like Windows 7 so could be easier to use for you.

You can also try lighter ones like Xubuntu or Lubuntu but they lack some tools and are not so well customizable like Kubuntu.

Recommend trying all of them using live DVD or live USB (no need to install, you run the OS directly from DVD or usb stick)

Another one to consider is Puppy Linux. It runs very well on limited resources!

Lubuntu or Linux Lite imo.
