I've had my toshiba laptop for about 6 years and now the screen either goes black and the power light is still on. Or the screen gets black and whatever is on the screen at the time is scrambled completely if that makes sense. It started out just a few times in the day and progressively worse. I cleaned freed up space on the main hard drive and defragmented it. It has shut down a few times today instead of 7 or 8.

The fan cooling fan isn't working, so I've been using an external fan underneath and that has worked OK so far. But in the last few months it has overheated a lot, I used compressed air to get the dust out and that usually works. But it hasn't worked lately, so now I use a small house fan and that keeps it cool now.

How much is it usually to buy and install a new internal fan? Could that be why I'm getting the black screen? I feel like I've cleaned out everything that I could and it's still shutting down randomly, even if I'm not watching or doing anything.

Have you tried connecting to an external monitor with your laptop? If that works, then you know it must be a problem with your laptop screen. This "scrambling" would have to be a hardware issue related to the screen rather than software. You might want to invest in a whole new laptop, because replacing the screen and the internal fan would cost money, and it's becoming quite old as is.

Do you think I can get away with another 6 months before it dies completely? I can't afford another one right now, I just need something to buy some time before it dies for good. I don't really, it did this about 7 or 8 times but then after I freed up a lot of space and cleaned everything, it was a lot better. Maybe because it's not using so much power and not getting as hot?

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it! :)
