4790k overclocking without XMP profile?

So I currently have 16GBs of Kingston Hyperx 1866mhz CL10 DDR3 RAM and there's no XMP profile in my Asus Z97-AR motherboard for it. The only option for XMP is 'disabled'.

I might have the following issue since I got 8Gbs (2x4gb) of RAM with the motherboard (came with a bundle) and later bought another 8GBs of the same memory to upgrade to 16GB:

So my question is, is it safe to overclock the CPU while ignoring XMP/Memory overclocking (set it to manual or auto) since about every guide out there uses XMP profiles while overclocking the 4790k..?

My full system specs:

MB: Asus Z97-AR
CPU: Core i7 4790k with Corsair H100i
GPU: GTX660
RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB DDR3 1866mhz
PSU: Corsair AX760
Hard drives: 256GB Crucial MX100 SSD, Samsung 840 EVO 1TB, WD Green 4TB
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can. In fact, in some cases running DRAM speed too high can actually inhibit a CPU overclock.

Once you apply any overclock to the CPU, go back to your DRAM options and see if it unlocks your XMP profile - sometimes you have to OC the chip in order to OC the DRAM.

I managed to OC the 4790k to 4.5Ghz @ 1.2 core voltage. Ran IBT very high 10 loops. But I still can't enable any XMP profiles. The DRAM frequency according to CPU-Z is 933 mhz though.

Weird.
