The problem is , most of the 750ti 's don't run in the prebuilts for some reason.

So would i have to switch my psu or my motherboard? or does the gtx have a chance of working with my prebuilt hp pavilion?

It has a 50\50 chance.

You don't want to get the 750ti that requires a 6 pin.

The problem can be with either component. Not only that, but you can't just switch motherboards on the OEM systems. They do not have a removable back plate for the motherboard on their cases. And cost becomes a factor if you start replacing many components.

I experienced this problem with a neighbor's HP computer (i5 based) and we wound up just having to give up on the Geforce 750 Ti and went with a much lower end card (Geforce GT 630) that did work. It runs games better than the on board Intel HD video, but it is still far less capable than a 750 Ti.
