But even after disabling my wireless connection, when I plug in an Ethernet cable, it doesn't even recognize it. Light comes on, nobody home. Help?

it is possible that you have lost functionality of your NIC. if its onboard and it DOES NOT show up under network devices the only other place it would show up is under "Unknown Devices" but if everything you have in your device manager appears to be installed correctly then there is a decent chance its...

is the adapter disabled?
did you have any static IP's set up on these 2 adapters?

right click your connection icon/ network and sharing center / change adapter settings on the left /
and make sure the Local one is enabled.

if its wired directly into the Modem you cant have a static IP unless your modem is a surfboard.

I'll try this one when I get home today. When looking at that screen however, I don't even see an icon for anything but the wireless network - pretty sure I should have specified that.

if you uninstall or just remove the wireless adapter and you see a wireless bar sign with no connection on the bottom right of the taskbar then your LAN Adapter is not functioning at all.. if you see the monitor icon with a red "X" on it then its disabled. you may actually see this icon in any case.

but whatever icon you have down there for you connection is "Right Clickable" to brin up the Network and sharing center

otherwise you can just go to start and search network and you should see it on there.

also... you can right click "My Computer" and go to manage then click on "Device Manager" and look under "Network Adapters"
If one of them is not functioning you would recieve a yellow " ! " icon. if its disabled you will see an arrow pointing down.

and if it says something like "Generic Ethernet Controller" then you have no drivers installed for your NIC

OK there's literally nothing under devices if I unplug the wireless adapter. The cable is fine, the router I use is too and just in case have switched the ports on the back of it. The cable works with my older apple laptop. The light comes on on the back of the computer where the cable is plugged in. Still nothing... is my motherboard broken for not recognizing it has an ethernet port???

Thanks for all the help so far!

What I have tried to do under connections is "add a new connection" or something along those lines. It asks for a username and password - but my network info doesn't work - it tells me something failed and will retry every 60 seconds... not sure if that helps either.

the only thing i could say to do for sure to test is to do a fresh install of your OS and hope it hows up.
if its still not showing up then you may need to get a new MoBo
