My desktop is in the attic. Unfortunately due to the fact that my parents though having the router in the basement was a good idea, I get awful wifi coverage.; Does verizon wire ethernet jacks? If not do you know of any companies in the DC metro area that do?

Solution
This is a challenging issue. Some other options to consider include powerline, moca if you have coax already where the desktop is, or a better wifi adapter for the desktop with a larger antenna. While a dedicated Ethernet line over CAT would be the ideal, with the cost issues you may want to give the others a try.
They likely will for a big price they will hire someone and add a percentage. The only fairly inexpensive way you are going to do this is to run the wire on the ourside of the house...ie drill though the outside walls. In most houses there is not easy path between floors because of fire codes. If you were just say from the basement to the first floor you might be able to find the bottom of a wall and drill up though it. When you must go say between the first and second floor it works the same way but how do you manage to drill holes without also putting large holes in the wall. In most cases you have no choice. Most the costs are going to be to fix all the wall coverings.

It partially depends on the city code and I don't know about DC. Sometime you must actually be a licensed electrician to run lan cable...some even require a special extra license for low voltage cable. That is the key wording..low voltage cable because lan cable will be the same restrictions as say alarm system cable or coax tv wires. What is strange is the cable company installs things all the time so there may be some way to get around these building codes.

I would call a couple electricians and see if they will give you a general idea of cost over the phone. I know when we have these put in commercial buildings they charge us at least $100/jack but these are in simple run over a suspended ceiling and drop it down a wall.

I strongly suspect the only way you are going to get this done cost effectively is to do it yourself and run the wire on the outside of the house.
