Hey all, In the next couple of months, I'd like to build a new rig.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/VRRtLk

I'm planning out what I would like, I know some things could change in a few months so not everything is set in stone. I would like to get some feedback on parts, like RAM, Video card, CPU, Case. I appreciate your patience and the time that you might take reading all this.

This build is about what I would like to spend, I think that it would suit my needs. I would like to be able to play the newest games on very high settings, I am also learning linux so compiling from source will be a big use also. I know an i7 would be ideal for this, but for the price difference I think the i5 4690K should do just fine. And I've been told that an i7 wont make much of a difference for gaming.

Now, all that said. I have a few questions.

1. RAM - I hear that DDR4 will be coming out soon by the time I start ording all this stuff DDR4 will be right around the corner, so I believe the ram I have chosen now will do just fine for now. I tried to get 2100MHz RAM but PC parts picker told me that it need a cpu that supported 1.6v for ram, and the i5 I have chosen only supports 1.5. So I bumped back down to 1866. Now, Will the motherboard I selected be able to run DDR4? is there any that support it as of now? Or should I wait to build a rig?
RAM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231538&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
MB- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130776&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Also, I see some people saying that they set their RAM timing to something like "5,5,5,8" or something like that, what are they refurring to? I've seen numbers like this associated with RAM but I have no idea what his means, or how i go about setting that.

2. CASE - I really like this case, I just don't really know if I need it. There are other really good cases for half the price. My main objective with the case I want is, keeping the rig nice and cool without a custom watercool system. Looks are somewhat important but cooling is more important. Some of these cases are just crazy looking to me, I care more about it just being stylish without being crazy looking. I like blue, I really like this case but are there cheaper ones that will give me the same options as this one, I.E., airflow, design, hotswapable bays, lots of room, easy cable managment.

3. GPU - Now, I know this can be a bit subjective, but I want some more opinions. I have seen charts that put the performance of this GPU above Geforce's equal, But I hear about physX and that it is great, but what games even use it? Black Opps 2? BioShock? and I might possible want to add another down the road. Or upgrade to next gen Vid cards.

4. SSD - I will eventually get an SSD, but I dont know of any good dependible brands, i would probably get something like a 250GB, I think ive seen them go for $150-$200 range.

5. HDD - I have heard good things about the Seagate Barracuda? (spelling) for dependablity and performance. Are there any other suggestions,

OK, SO, the main PRIORITIES of this build will be as follows,
1. Great performance once its finished for Gaming and Linux stuff.
2. Dual boot windows and linux
3. Upgradable for the next few generations - RAM,CPU,GPU

alot of these questions I really just need update from you guys, I have been out of the computer game for a while and havent really had time to keep up lately, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

1) Super high ram speeds have not shown major gains in Tom's benchmarks. They did an article on this a while back.
"9,9,9.27" or whatever spec the ram is refers to the ram timings. CL9 is faster than CL 10, etc. Tighter timings generally give more performance than minor increases in ram clock speed. Look in the product details for this info.
2) That's a really nice case. Do you "need" it? Probably not. As you said, excellent airflow can be had for less money. So that's up to you.
3) The video card is a very strong performer in that price bracket. Golden rule of video cards, no matter what one you buy, a "better" one will go on sale next week. You certainly won't be disappointed with it. Keep an eye here on Tom's and other sources, and see what the next few months brings to card prices.
4) Samsung 840 Evo SSD. One of a few top ranked SSD's. Excellent software.. I have one, and get great benchmark and real world performance from it. Again, watch for sales over the next couple months while you do this project. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269.html Tom's article on SSD's.

5) Hybrid platter drives intrigue me, seem like a great compromise between storage and speed, and since you want to dual boot, the extra cost for one may be worth it so you can run your Linux partition on the platter drive , with room for a partition with a copy of your fresh Windows install to clone over to the SSD later on if you need/want to re install Windows.

Thanks for the replies.

Well, i guess i would like to spend no more than $1300 on the rig itself.

That psu is a 750watt 80+gold fully modular. Its $120 i dunno if i really need to spend the $ on that. I know there are others with the same wattage for around $80. I just dont know what the benefit is over the other.

And the hybrid drive is a good idea, but i know ill eventually upgrade to a ssd, dunno if the hybrid will be of any use then.

If you guys have any suggestion s on how i could save some cash without lessining the life span of the rig or losing to much performance please enlighten me.

A high quality psu will last you for like ten years plus. There is a guide here on Tom's someplace that tells you which brands are actually made by which company. Seasonic and rebranded Seasonic's are usually a pretty safe bet. You mentioned possible SLI/Crossfire in the future, keep that in mind and decide if you want to plan ahead for that.

Coolermaster 912 HAF case. Which has an additonal ten dollars off right now lol!

I have this case. Great airflow, will hold two 12" long (or longer) video cards, and is $55. That's $90 or so dollars right there saved.
Buy a Hyper 212 cpu cooler instead of going with a quite expensive water cooler. That's over $100 saved.
And zero performance loss.

Your partpicker shows a total of $1275 right? Make those two changes and you can get a 240 GB SSD and be at pretty much the same price, including the platter drive.

Buy the SSD later and be under $1100. And I was kind of suggesting the hybrid AND the SSD, since you want to run a dual boot set up.
You may be able to take $30 or $40 dollars off the psu cost if you watch for sales, Do not buy no name psu, ever.

However the above two things would drop the price a lot, without sacrificing any performance whatsoever.

If the items from the Never Settle bundle with the video card are not things you actually want, it may be possible to sell them on Ebay after to bring your cost down farther.

I've seen that case, it's not bad, It just doesnt look like there are many fans to go into it, and it looks a little snug,
BTW, I have changed my mind on the motherbored. I changed it to this,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132118&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

And I'm a bit confused on the hybrid drive thing, are you saying I could put linux on the platter drive and windows on the ssd?

Cool! So you saved some money, and upgraded the mobo. This is goodness.
I have 5 120 mm fans in my case right now, 2 on the front blowing in, one top back, and two on top, those three all drawing air out.
Works pretty well.

And yes you could, in the future, put Windows on the SSD and Linux on the platter, with room to spare for a fresh windows install on a separate partition, "just in case". Makes recovering from any errors far faster. Certainly not neccessary. Just convenient.

Thanks for the help!

I just learned that all the new cpu's, MB, and ram are about to come out. Should i wait to build this? Or would this setup still run with all the new games in a year or two?

It would work just fine for the next few years, and one could just add a new/better gpu at that point. Or you could wait for the new stuff to come out. And then the new stuff after that, etc. Computer tech moves fast. But if you want to stay at the same price point, the "new" will not be massively faster. One has to decide if you want a new gaming rig now, or 6 months from now. At which point there will be rumours of the next new thing. It never ends.

There is no definitive answer to that question. But your chosen build is solid.

OK, thanks for the suggestion. SO the plan will be, the same as it was, But I will watch for the new stuff, if its about the same price I might get it, if it's not and all the stuff now is much cheaper, well then its a no brainer!
