I am looking for a home server (buy or build) that I can put in my basement to act as my media center for TV, movies, audio, Plex, etc.... as well as misc files. I also hope to use it as a print server and how knows what else. I'm not a computer idiot (I'm a developer) but I have been out of the hardware game for quite a while.
I hope to wire a remote terminal upstairs and/or remote desktop to access the server. I also plan on doing a dual-boot (windows and Linux) so I can get more familiar with Linux (is that a bad idea on a media server?)
Any suggestions would help. I hope to keep it under $500 including the OS (Windows 8 I guess) but I hope to get a deal on the OS through my work.
