So I'm off to university and not sure if a monitor is a good idea to use as an all in one solution. Obviously I don't want to bring too much to a dorm and there is the space constraint as well. I'm afraid it will hinder me in gaming due to the low response time. I will be using a Dynex 24". (I know, it sucks but just for one year, then I will upgrade once I get my own place)

If you aren't into heavy gaming, a TV is OK.

Monitors usually have a lower response time and are much cheaper. To get a good tv for gaming it would cost a lot. Also, monitors are usually smaller, thats also why they are cheaper. It's hard to find a tv under 32 inches. If the tv has a low response time then there is no point in getting a new monitor but if the response time on your tv is above 10ms then a monitor could improve your gaming. Like i7baby said, if you are not gaming a tv is fine.

Computer monitors work well for TV (with a tuner added - either through the computer or a cable box via HDMI), however, the TV doesn't work as well for a monitor - although it can be used in a pinch. A good 24" monitor can be purchased for $150-$200 that works great for gaming (there are better monitors for gaming) and be an excellent TV.

I have HTPC's in my house, and the TV's display the video from streaming services and via tuner in the PC. Both are great for viewing video, but I wouldn't use either as a monitor for a PC (although a 60" monitor could be fun in theory).....

My two cents, from some one who uses a TV as a monitor. I have a 40in LED 120Hz TV for my monitor, and I love it, I don't have to sit right next to it, only one place to go for TV and computer, and I've just got the bedroom basically for both. Even though mine is supposedly 120Hz, that's just the computer inside the TV, the panel is only 60Hz, but that's enough for gaming for most people, now, if you're coming from a 120/144Hz monitor, then it'd be a bad idea, you can't go back, it's simply not as smooth, but, if you're like the rest of us, you don't have a video card that can push 144 Frames at 1080p or better. Wait a second, I do have the video cards to push that. But I'm not a twitch gamer. For MMOs and Diablo and whatnot, 60Hz is fine. I talked my parents into getting a 60in LED in their living room, they like solitaire, but now they play it on the big screen, and have never looked back for a monitor.

Also, wanted to mention, Got my TV/monitor on black Friday two years ago for 199$ shipped. There simply isn't a 40in monitor in that price range. My parents got their TV second hand, had a problem with it, Samsung gave them a brand new one with more features than the old one, went from non smart to smart, they paid 500 three years ago for their 60in, and same thing, you just can't get a monitor for that in that size.

When it boils down, the panels are only made by a few manufacturers, whether they are monitors or TVs and they are not all equal, it is up to the individual to find what fits their needs. For me, it'll always be size and resolution over GTG and Hz with one addendum. I won't do 4k until the get it up to 60Hz. But that'll be HDMI 2 when ever that comes on a video card, and TV. BTW TVs are cheaper only cause they're mass produced, not necessarily because the quality is lowered. Get a plasma.

When you think of a computer monitor, you are usually sitting 24" - 36" away from them. A 40" - 60" TV could be used for computers if you were sitting 120" - 150" away from them (2-3 feet away computer, 10-12 feet for a TV).

Why just considering monitor or TV, I will like to add mini led projector to it too. Monitor and Tv have limited functionalities , rather consider a mini projector which can multi act as your monitor, your TV, your gaming display, INTERNET entertainment system and many more possibilities. You can resize screen from 10" to 120", depending on your need. Even though of going to friends place for gaming meet, carry your mini projector, connect to x-box or psp etc and enjoy. Will TV or monitor have this possibility ? Take projector to camping, carry movies on pen drive, connect with power bank and enjoy what you want to. How cool is this !!!

Numerous possibilities , just need to think out for the box. Check details
