Hi everyone!
I asked this question back in February but almost 6 months has passed and I'm getting ready to buy a new GPU......Currently, I don't play any crazy games....But I would like to be able to.....

Here is my computer:
Amd Phenom IIx4 955 (Not Black edition....Not sure)
Windows 7
Gtx 460 756mb
600w Power Supply
8gb Ram

Everyone keeps telling me to get the Gtx 760, which is the highest I can go without the dreaded bottleneck. Is there anything currently better that would pair well with this cpu?

Solution

I would recommend he overclock it up to at least 3.7-3.8Ghz no matter what. As I mentioned last time we both posted about a topic like this, the Phenom II 955 at stock bottlenecked my GTX 750 Ti in several games. The Phenom IIs can still have good performance if you get those core clocks up (based on benchmarks at least), but stock isn't really cutting it anymore.

If your X4 955 was a BE you'd at least have the option to OC it and open up some better options. I have a Phenom II X4 955 BE and at stock I wouldn't go above a GTX 660 or R9 270. At 3.8 Ghz I'd have no problem hooking it up to a GTX 760 or R9 280. I actually have mine paired with an HD 7850 2GB and they're a good match.

I used to have a 768MB GTX 460 and a Phenom II 955.
I should have replaced the CPU, not the GTX 460. The Phenom II was holding me back in many games.

Also, every Phenom II 955 is a 'black edition'. Not sure why they bothered to call it a black edition at all.

I CAN overclock it in the bios menu, so does that mean it's the BE version? How can I tell for certain.....

that's why I've held off for so long......I get d o many conflicting answers lol

It *is* the black edition. As I said, every Phenom II 955 is a black edition.

Yeah, I currently have it overclocked to 3.58ghz I believe......Whenever I go higher it Blue Screens within 5 minutes of using prime 95 and gets really hot......
I have this case:
http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001951

I have 6 case fans total....

  • 2 Cooler Master Intake (Front)
    1-Thermaltake intake (Bottom)
    1-Thermaltake exhaust (Rear)
    2- Noctua exhaust (Top)

I also have a Zalman CPU Cooler......Ambiant Cpu Temp idle is 32-38 and under load is 50ish.

Like I said I've tinkered with the overclock but not sure what voltages I should be doing.....I usually just use the "EZ Overclock" on my Asrock Mobo, in the bios (Currently at a x5)........
