Just moved into a student living apartment set up with Verizon Fios. Basically, we have coax and ethernet jacks in every room. There is (what Im guessing, as it says Verizon and is a big white box) is the ONT in one closet. The router works on any coax currently, as does tv. I have a desktop pc and want to use the ethernet jack in my bedroom while my roommates use wireless. Right now the ethernet jacks do not work. I read online that I have to call Verizon to have them change the connection from Moca/coax to ethernet. Is this true? Will this enable the ethernet jacks in each room? And will the tv still work?

Im assuming I would just switch the input on the router from the ONT to the Ethernet to use the wireless after they do the switch.
Id post this to the Verizon forum, but seeing as its a student apartment, we do not have our own account.

Basically:
Verizon -> ONT ->verizon router -> devices

The connection between the ONT and router is usually (but not always) coax. If TV service is included with this, then the Verizon router must be in the chain somewhere.

My current FiOS connection is coax direct from the ONT to the router. From the router, out to switches and multiple devices.

You need to find out where those wall jack ethernet cables terminate. Run cable from there to the router.
The ethernet jacks in the wall will not work just because you switch the verison ONT. All that does is allow you to run the cable between the ONT and the router on ethernet. You would still need to run the ethernet out the lan jacks on the router to the rooms.

You would have to find the location the ethernet wall jacks are cabled to. I would bet it is in the same closet the ONT is in. Although it is not the optimum place for wireless you could place your router there and hook all the wall jacks to the router. Otherwise you need a switch in that closet to connect the wall jacks to. You still would need to find a way to connect the router back to the switch.

I don't know if there is a huge advantage to using the ethernet out of the ONT other than there is a larger selection of routers that you can attach, performance wise it is likely the same.

Okay, so I would keep it as coax and just try to find out where the ethernet that goes to each room begins? And use those as the 1-4 on the back of the router? So basically the ethernet jacks are just an extension of the connections on the back of the router.
Thanks, Ill look into it.

Okay awesome. Ill test this out asap. The cables have to terminate somewhere, just gotta find it!
