So today I was using my computer like any other day, hadn't even played a game yet, and suddenly, there were green, pink and various other colored pixels flashing all over my screen and black lines in the corners. Shortly after that began, my screen went black for a good 5 seconds, and then Windows informed me that my GPU had stopped working and "recovered successfully". Well, this continued to happen until my entire display froze (but the friend I was talking to on skype could still hear me and vice versa).
So my first response was to launch in safe mode. I'm not a computer wizard so I just kind of looked around my device manager and made sure it was detecting my GPU. Waited there for a while, not an issue. Went back from safe mode and there were no issues for a few more hours, and then they started again. Same deal, graphics appearing all over my screen, black lines and then screen shuts off, comes back on and tells me my GPU failed and recovered.
Neither time did I check my temps, which reading around seems like that could be the issue.
I swapped my GPU out for a really old GPU I had, a HD 6750, which didn't want to use my DVI so now I'm on a HDMI cable with a black border around my desktop, but whatever. I switched it out to make this post. Now for info.
Windows 7
7870 IceQ GPU
i7-2600k (watercooled)
8GB RAM
TX750 750W PSU.
Also I should mention I was using the AMD 14.4 drivers from 4-25-2014 I believe, the most recent ones, and I've had this GPU since January 2013.
If anyone responds telling me to go check my temps, I will, but for now I'm sticking with ol' reliable...
Thanks; if I'm lacking any info please tell me.

First thing i would have done is taken the card out and re-seated it in the pcie slot, sometimes you can get bad connections. Secondly, use driversweeper to remove all AMD driver software/reg entries in safe mode, reboot, download latest whql driver and reinstall. Get HWmonitor to check gpu and system temps.

I also used catalyst to remove AMD drivers and reinstalled the most up to date ones. My theory is that it is more of hardware than software as this is a new problem and nothing has changed with my card recently besides age and use.

Srry to say that ur gpu is dying. Those weird colors are signs that ur capacitors have degraded too much.
Would another symptom be crashing especially on games such as Total War: Rome 2 and Battlefield 4?
Ofc,
But I might be wrong, it might just be a driver issue.
Best way to test is to dump it in another pc and see.
If u cant do that.
Downclock the card with MSI afterburner to ensure stability, then run furmark.
If u still see werid colors/crashes with the stress test, Ur card is likely dying soon.

7870 is a realitively new card. GPU should last atleast 2 years even with 24h use with decent cooling.Even so, ur card might still be under warranty (usually 2-3 years)
Yeah I have contacted HIS, hoping for a resolution from them. I might try what you said to do, as this card I'm using is way worse in comparison and I'd like to use my best one.

How old is the TX750 750W PSU?If it is getting close to 5 years, it's probably the problem. 5 years is typical lifespan for the dielectric insulation in the capacitors. Graphics card problems are generally the first symptom.
It is more like 1 year with the PSU, and switching GPUs I now have 0 issues.

heat, you should really check temps. Bad ram or out of spec power could also cause that problem, but less likely. It still pays to go through the troubleshooting procedure, you dont want to fork out for another gpu and find its something else.
