How do I delete everything off a hard drive?

So soon I'm getting an ssd so I was just going to delete everything off my hdd and use it as a data drive but the only tutorials that I've found is reformatting the drive but I don't want the os on it either. Could I just literally select all the files on the hdd and press delete? That won't break it or anything?

Install your ssd and install your os on it. Copy all the files you want to keep from the hdd to the ssd. Format your hdd from within the os on the ssd.
