Windows 8 or Windows 7 for Gaming?

Solution
Engineering, you might run into older applications that don't like Windows 8. You should ask your fellow students or professor(s) their recommendation. I can tell you that industry moves much slower then Microsoft, and with support for Windows 7 through 2020 vendors don't have a lot of motivation to support 8 and 8.1.

(In the midst of deploying Windows 8.1 for a fortune 500 engineering firm, most of it works, but we have a lot of applications that ended up being virtualized in Windows 7, or even XP)
Many, many people prefer W7 because they dislike the W8 user interface, however Windows 8.1 offers better performance in newer games like BF 4, Watch Dogs, etc. Better multi-core utilization and it supports DirectX 11.2. It still has some bugs, but so did W7 when it was introduced. Gets better every day.

I hate the interface too, but just use Classic Shell to make it act more like 7.
