Hi guys. I just bought a new laptop (sony vaio f15318) and I was wondering if it could run some of the latest games, as well as ones from a few years back at med-high settings. The configuration is
Intel i5 4200u 1.6ghz turbo boost to 2.6ghz
Nvidia Geforce Gt740m 1 gb/ intel hd 4400
4 Gb DDR3 ram upgradeable to 8
os is windows 8.1 64 bit
I have played far cry 3 at ultra with 20-30 fps. Was wondering if i could play similar games like that. Maybe watch dogs or the upcoming gta 5?
Also, does it make much of a difference to have a 2gb graphics card vs the 1gb i have right now?
Thanks in advance! :D

No. A 740M (the video card) is too low end and NO you can't "replace it" either, you can only replace the whole laptop.
Watch Dogs 2014...

As you've seen with Far Cry 3, it can play a lot of newer games at high settings as well as older ones at their highest settings. The mobile GPU's are impressive, but are a bit slower than their desktop counterparts. 2GB video memory is better than 1GB and could make a big different, but overall, I think you shouldn't have trouble playing modern games at high settings. Maybe not the highest settings, but good settings.

Thanks for the quick reply. Could you recommend some games similar to the ones I posted? And will the lappy be able to handle the upcoming titles like gta 5 and far cry 4?

Watch Dogs 2014 low graphics settings, 1024x768 display, gives: 40.1 fps , med. 1366x768 25 fps ,
high 1920x1080 8.1 fps. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-740M.89900.0.html

Modern gaming on PC is expensive due the hardware demands. A desktop PC is about $1000+ to play at the levels your hoping for on the games your targetting. On PORTABLE it is 2X that cost, or minimally $2000 due to the extra costs to keep it lightweight (not 15lbs), small factor (to fit inside the laptop as compared to a desktop case), heat issues, portable power limitations, etc.

Summary, yes this 'new' laptop was great years ago (4+ years ago) for those games, but won't cut it for 2013 forward titles. For the LARGE $$$ of the computer to play at LOW graphics on such a SMALL display (1024x768) I think is a total waste, when you can get a heck lot better performance and graphics (Assassin's Creed:Unity for example at 1080p-1920x1080 at HIGH graphics around 60FPS!) on a PS4 for same / less cost.
