Hi,
Recently my computer crashed while I was transferring a large amount of data over to my WD My Book 2TB external. I restarted my PC to find it was no longer showing up in My computer.
In device manager and the boot menu of the bios sometimes it shows up sometimes it doesn't.
Since then I've taken it out of it's casing and put it in my computer and used a range of recovery software with a variety of error messages, a few saying mbr is damaged, which I think is probably right, is there a simple way to replace or fix the mbr?
I've tried widows recovery tool, no joy.
WD diagnostics gives me the message 11-Cable Test::Write sector error! After switching my cables around I'm certain all cables are working fine.
When the Hard Drive does show up it shows as have no sectors and when I try to initialize it I get the message "the request cannot be performed because of an i/o error"
I'm currently downloading ubuntu to run boot-repair and see if that helps.
Any ideas that may help would be much appreciated. :-D

You need to connect your drive back to its original USB SATA Bridge interface card. WD My Books are known to have a built-in hardware encryption which is handled by its own USB-SATA Bridge board. Thus, you can not just simply remove the drive out of its own enclosure and connect to a different controller or to your PC's internal SATA port since you'll get your drive to be unreadable due to the encryption.

Thanks for the info, it's been a painful few days of head sratching, I've rebuilt it and I'm currently running testdisk on ubuntu, but the read error is remaining 1 short of the cylinder analysed, (at 03% after about an hour) I've never used testdisk or ubuntu before. Would you happen to know if this is also because of the encryption? I'm just going to leave it going over night and then do a deep search if it's worth it?

It's back in its original enclosure, it showing up in computer management and device maneger but not in my computer. WD diagnostics is giving the same error as before, only takes less time for the error to show up, it's instant now.

I've downloaded CrystalDiskinfo and MyBook isn't showing up, only my internal HDD is showing. And I've given WD diagnostics another go that SMART status says not available and on quick test I get the error message; 11-Cable test: diagnostics sector error
