Because you can overclock them, whereas models without the k can't. So you can get more horsepower from k models basically

The -K suffix in these processors means "Unlocked". Any Intel Core processor with a K suffix can be overclocked. The ones without the suffix cannot be overclocked, and thus they're locked.

The K-chips are unlocked so you can overclock them to increase their speeds. Intel charges a premium for the privelege.
