Dear All,
Just bricked(?) my THIRD router trying to upgrade firmware to dd-wrt. Going crazy trying to think what I'm doing wrong. Did 30/30/30 reset, set static IP, connected by cable to LAN port (should it be WAN port?). Uploads firmware via router GUI OK, but won't restart, every time. Waited 10 mins. Nothing. I'm sure I've got all the right files but every time won't restart. Using Win XP and IE 8. Doing something wrong, but what.
Any suggestions what is problem. Don't mind if you call me a dope if you've got right answer and it's obvious. I recently bought a used WR1043 already flashed with dd-wrt, so must be possible. On first failure tried soldering serial connection on router circuit board. Eyes too bad, hopeless at soldering, made bad job of it so gave up.

Any help, any ideas, very, very welcome.

Solution
Changing to DD-WRT often changes the IP Address. If I remember right some versions change the IP to 192.168.11.1. Anyway hook you PC to one of its LAN ports and enable DHCP. If DHCP is enabled on you computer go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /release (and hit enter), then type ipconfig /renew (and hit enter). See if it gives you a different IP Address. If so notice the default gateway address and try to get to it through your browser.

Powers on, appears to boot, then stops. Power light, LAN light on steadily. No SYS light. When it is at restart stage, how long should I wait for dd-wrt screen to appear before giving up. I've just a gut feeling it's to do with some setting - IP addresses, maybe.
Computer IP 192.168.1.5, gateway 192.168.1.3, router set to 192.168.1.1 before starting update.
Firewall is OFF. Some security feature of IE, perhaps? Its happened three times. I've done something wrong but what.
Thanks for quick response.

By the way, third time I had wireshark running. saved output but can't interpret it. What might help in output?

How to enable DHCP on computer? I've always had it enabled on a router. Thanks for suggestion. Will try. Can I use your idea on one of the partially updated routers?

Yes!!! That was it. IP was changed to 192.168.11.1. I would mever have guessed - I managed to awaken one of the three routers. dd-wrt already installed. Now to try the other two....
Thanks so much for your idea.

Great with a little luck maybe you can get the others working too.
