Okay I just got a new laptop I bought it used from Computer Upgrade King on Amazon. It is a HP Envy 15t-j100 (the one with Windows 8.1)
The specs are:
I7-4700MQ (Intel 4600 Graphics)
Geforce 740M
8GB Ram
1TB HDD
As soon as I fired it up it ran through setup since it was factory reset. I went through setup as expected and everything seemed to be working. Until I thought I would the the Geforce Control panel not installed. So I went to HP's website and grab the Geforce driver. I ran it and I get Error Nvidia install cannot continue compatible graphics hardware not found. Device Manager only shows the 4600 and 0 Unkown devices I don't know if it has Optimus in the conventional sense I tried stock Nvidia drivers they don't work either.

Solution
Sounds like the GPU is either missing or faulty. Have you checked BIOS settings to make sure it isn't just disabled, and that it shows up in there at least?

I updated the BIOS it doesn't show any hardware info other then the CPU and Ram. By missing do you mean physically not installed? I am going to try Linux and a reinstall of Windows before I call and bug HP. In case I happen to be blind were is the GPU setting (if any) in the BIOS/UEFI

Varies by BIOS, but you should see it it listed as a device that is consuming IRQs if the BIOS is that detailed.

Right, they could have taken the GPU out of the computer before reselling it if it is removable, or they were sent one without a GPU, or it doesn't work. Since it still boots and displays they may not have bothered to check further.

Buying used and refurbished products always has an element of risk. If it still has a valid warranty you should definitely hit up HP.

Well Linux only seen the Haswell Mobile. Reinstalling Windows didn't fix it. I found a thread on HP's forum a few other people are having the same problem. HP seems to be blaming the last slew of Microsoft updates. I am planning on sending it in over Christmas break to get fixed the warranty is good until mid 2015 I do basic video editing and I use this as my notebook for High school which starts next week. Which is why I am putting it of until Christmas when I don't use it as much. My BIOS is only good for Virtualization, Boot order, and Secure Boot and hey paid $617 for an i7 not that bad a deal. I might pop her open and see if the GPU is there or not. Most Geforces I have seen are on a daughterboard but that was way before Optimus. Plus this is still a HUGE upgrade from my old HP 2000-239WM with its Celeron T3500

It is more common for the lower end cards to be soldered directly to the motherboard. This appears to be the case here. There are three models, One with only Intel, One with the 740M, and another with a 750M.

You should certainly inquire with the seller, HP probably won't swap out the motherboard if you bought the wrong model.

Well I'll be the service guide HP tech on the HP fourm just gave me lists all part numbers. He also sounded like they would just ship me the motherboard and I could swap it myself (I have done it before) it says the replacement board even includes thermal paste.
Also I just opened her up the 740m is definitely it is much smaller than I thought but it must be faulty.

Okay so I talked to HP for 3 hours today. They would not believe me because they couldn't see it in device manager so I told them I could see the chip on the motherboard. (It also has a Geforce sticker unless someone thought it would be funny to just stick one on it.) So they are sending me a Pre-paid box and they are going to swap out the motherboard. Which is good because the 2nd ram rail has bent pins on it which will also be fixed by a new board. It is going to take a week to be done so I guess it could be worse. At least I still have my old laptop.
