Launch a Program Before Explorer.exe???

Long-time lurker, first-time poster ;o)

I'm using an old copy of SP2 as an offline mule for some rather indispensible programs. Of relevant note, the system uses minlogon as a lightweight alternative to winlogon. All works very well for my purposes.

However, there is one thing which I'm interested in doing which is just a bit out of the ordinary: I want to launch a program before Explorer gets fired at boot time. Due to some quirks with the minlogon applet, this cannot be accomplished via the usual Winlogon-Userinit registry routine; so I find myself a bit at a loss. The closest I've gotten to what I'm looking for is modifying "Shell" at the Winlogon key to include the other executable's entry as well; but, of course, Explorer gets run first here (or else!). Finally, I thought, perhaps, there might be another entry in the hives where I could launch with winlogon itself; but I couldn't seem to dig anything up on that excursion either.

In sum, are there any ideas as to how something could be launched before Explorer.exe without the better-known approach through Userinit? Is there another reg entry which could be "piggybacked" like Winlogon/Shell to do the work???

Thanks!
