Wish I could copy / paste my files like I used to with the WD Book models . 'cause all I can see after a first backup are bundles of categories . Is it all that you're allowed to see on those so sexy Passport ultra ? Maybe there a list of each individual file somewhere ? WHERE ? Didn't found it yet. If so , tell me please … Is disconnecting that SMARTWARE a way to access and manage each individual file and copy/paste or drag the files back n' forth between laptop and Passport manually ?

Hello there eden B,

I would say that the WD SmartWare provides different back up options which I find useful. Though, if you are used to just copy/pasting your data and it fits your needs, you can uninstall the software.
In order to do so you can check out page 66 from the user manual: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-70505...

Hope this will help,

To access files backed up with SmartWare you must use the "Retrieve" feature within the SmartWare utility:
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-70505...

If you want to access your backed up files directly in Windows Explorer you must perform backups manually without using SmartWare or any other proprietary file-backup software. I never use backup software for that reason. I always backup manually using copy/paste or drag-and-drop.

Backup software like SmartWare backs up your files in a proprietary format, which is why you can't access them without using that same software. That's a total pain in the bum as far as I'm concerned and doesn't jive with the way I like to work.

Hola Phillip ! Thanks for that fast answer .
[ I always backup manually using copy/paste or drag-and-drop. ]
That's exactly what I want to do ...
Now, you would have to guide me through that ordeal , 'cause since I disconnected that Smartware ... if My Passport (G:)  seems still to be recognized (it's there in my library ), clicking on it
doesn't open no window nowhere . Would you please explain how to proceed ? Cheers !

Just a quick suggestion from my side. If you have data on the drive, just install SmartWare again and back up all the data. After that you can reformat the drive and do your back ups the way that is most suitable for you.
