i just opened up my new AMD Athlon II X4 760K Black Edition and looked at the stock heatsink. It doesn't seem to have any thermal paste on it? How can i tell?
If its brand new and not an open box it will be there. AMD and Intel ship every stock heatsink with a square of thermal paste on the base.
If you happen to get the very rare one that missed the thermal paste at the factory you'll find out really quick as your CPU temps will be through the roof.
There should be a square of gray goop in the center of the bottom of the heatsink. If its an aluminum base it will be hard to see but it should look something like this
