I've looked around all over the place and haven't found a solid answer. I want to know, would I be able to buy a Sapphire Radeon R9 290, put it in my Mac Pro, and have it work properly and up to standard, because it seems like that card meets my needs for use. I know nvidia cards are great, I just need better open CL performance because a majority of the apps I use take advantage of it.

Which generation of Mac Pro? For the most part, thanks to apple's restrictive ecosystem, you are limited to only the card models that they supported during that generation. The last two generations(not the can one) supported 5770s and 5870s, I don't think you will find native support for an R9 290 but someone may have a workaround for it.

Apple does support newer cards, I know for a fact that they support the higher end 7000 series, and the gtx series from I believe 400+. I have the 5,1.

The R9 290 is a great card for the Mac Pro as long as you get the drivers.
