USB port issue

Hello,

I have a new build with Asus Z97-A motherboard - only a few weeks old. For some reason my USB ports are not working well. The devices either are not recognized, or if they are recognized the sometimes disappear and reappear. Sometimes, they work fine. The devices I am using are external hard drives, an ASUS USB wireless adaptor, and a Sandisk SD card reader. They are all giving me intermittent trouble.

I tried the Front USB 3 headers and they are also malfunctioning, so I'm not sure that it's due to a faulty USB port.

Note that I DO NOT seem to be having any persistent issue when connecting to USB 2, it is mainly USB 3

How do you know if you have the correct USB driver? I have Windows 8.1, 64 bit. For some reason, the Asus z97-A motherboard support page does not have any USB drivers listed. Not sure why not. I currently have the "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller" driver installed and the driver date is: 2/21/14.

Thanks for your time, appreciate any help or insight you could provide

The Intel z97- and H97-chipsets are the first Intel Chipsets with native USB 3.0 support. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/performance-chipsets/z97-chipset.html

You might find some on Intel's site, I've not searched and yes, your issue sounds like a driver issue.

You could also look to see if the driver has settings or options for sleep/power management or something like that that could cause it to go to sleep or disconnect. I once had a WiFi card that did stuff like that until I modified the driver options to run at full power.

Karsten75: you are the best.

Based on your direction, I contacted Intel online chat. The tech know what I was talking about immediately. Had me install an Intel "Management Engine Driver" and reinstall the Intel chipset. Appears the Management Engine Driver ended up installing 2 new drivers labeled "Intel 9 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller".

That seemed to work. USB 3 seems to be working very well now.

Much appreciated!

HERE WERE HIS INSTRUCTIONS:
Fred: please install this driver first
Fred: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/Intel_Chipset_Win7-8-8-1_VER10014.zip

Fred: restart the computer and then install this other driver
Fred: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/MEI-Win7-8-8-1_VER10001204.zip

Fred: if issue persists after that I recommend contacting ASUS* in order to check if they can reproduce the issue in their lab. if they can reproduce the issue then they will be able to provide feedback to Microsoft* about the driver issue
