Physx possibly causing game crashes

I recently played through Metro: Last Light. The game proudly says that it uses phsyx. From my very little knowledge about it, its a phsyx/particle engine type thing that is used in lots of modern games. For some reason, the thing lagged Metro: Last Light to entirely unplayable until I turned it off, in which it ran flawless.

I tried running Dishonored recently, and the game entirely just crashes right out of the starting gate. Due to a "lack of virtual memory", according to good ole windows; it also gives me enough errors to blind me. I had played that game previously with no issues what-so-ever, before I updated my gpu's drivers. It's probably entirely unrelated, but I thought maybe phsyx was to blame, since it doesn't seem to work on any games I have with it, which includes Dishonored. I have googled the topic endlessly with no results, and have thoroughly looked into the lack of virtual memory with no results. I could really use some professional advice on how to fix one, or both of these issues, since i've run out of ideas. Thanks!

I had no problems running Metro Last Light with PhysX on a GTX 650 (I switched to a GTX 760 :) ). I was using high settings @ 1080p. Anyways, you can find it in the video settings of each game. If you optimize it in Geforce Experience then PhysX will be disabled for most games.

Update: If you want to know how to run PhysX on your GTX 650, first try changing ALL the settings to minimum externally(You can google on how to do this). If that doesn't work, please list your specs and I'll try my best to help you out.

I recently had trouble with PhysX when I was still running my gtx 660, so I uninstalled just the PhysX, left my drivers alone, and then reinstalled a newer version of PhysX and that fixed the problem. Then I upgraded to a gtx 760 and PhysX wouldn't install when I did a clean install on the drivers. I was afraid the problem would return, so I left it unchecked (since it was a new install anyway), and I've had no problems at all. You may want to give that a try, it worked for me.

You may just want to roll back your drivers... or try both :)

I'm on a wireless connection with the worlds worst wifi card, and quite a bit away from my router, so I really didn't want to have to go download drivers, but I guess ill try that. Thanks!

Just try to uninstall and reinstall your PhysX first; before rolling back your drivers, it's not too big of a download. I'm so sorry :( I really hope this helps you, Good Luck!

You have no need to apologize, I appreciate any help I can get. Your idea of re-installing phsyX seems to have worked actually. I haven't played extensively through Metro: Last Light, but I went through the main intro sequence in D6 where it played 15 fps before re-installing phsyX, and it was running smoothly for the most part. good 35-45 fps on settings maxed. Dishonored still crashes on start-up however. Whats also weird, is that after I launch it once, and then it crashes, steam still claims the game is loaded, and won't close or load up another window of it. I have to sign out of my user account or turn of the computer to load it again, which is quite a pain. It seems thats an entirely different issue of "lack of virtual memory". I'm not sure about virtual memory, but I have 8 gigs of RAM, and plenty of room on my hard drive. I guess ill troubleshoot that some more. Thanks for the help!

I'm sorry, I'm not a pro although I have had many problems with STEAM games and these steps almost always seem to straighten things out for me: Did you verify the integrity of your games cache on Dishonored? Right click on Dishonored>Properties>Local Files>Verify Integrity of Games Cache. Give it some time, sometimes it takes a while. If that's not enough, you may want to delete local game content. But first, make sure under the updates tab that Cloud is enabled. That will delete the game for you but it will keep your saves and the problem with that is that you would have to reinstall the whole game and that's the big pain in the butt for you. I think these things could help you since you say you've played these before with this same gpu. But remember you updated those drivers, so might still have to roll back those drivers. Unfortunately, playing with 15 fps really sucks too so...well, it's up to you. I'll keep checking back to see how things are going, k?

Does anyone else have any suggestions for HahnSolo?
