I'm a somewhat noob so your advise is greatly appreciated :wahoo:

Here is my rig:
CPU: Intel Core i5 760 Lynnfield
MB: Intel DP55KG Extreme LGA1156 PCI 2.0
GPU: EVGA GTX 460 1g SC
RAM: CORSAIR 8GB DDR3 1600 2gx4 (CMX4GX3M2A1600C8)
PSU: CORSAIR 550W 12v @ 41a (CMPSU-550VX)
OS: windows 7 64bit

I bought this comp 4+ years back and I'm wondering if I should start over now or upgrade the GPU to get another year or so out of it.

Thanks.

Those should work fine with what you have now. In my case when I have old parts I usually end up either selling (for cheap) or giving them to a friend or family member. They will basically...

If you are going to use your computer for gaming then a GPU upgrade would be the best option for getting better FPS in games. A CPU upgrade would help in certain CPU limited games or if you are planning to use your computer for things like Video encoding or content creation. BTW there is no real reason to start over with that machine if you wanted all you would really need to do is buy a motherboard and CPU and put your memory and GPU in the new motherboard. Of course windows might need to be reinstalled but if you bought your copy of windows it wouldn't be an issue. Your memory is still good at least until Intel and AMD release DDR4 based processors (The upcoming Intel Haswell-E being the first of those)

Sorry forgot to mention that this is only for Gaming.

@iAboodz Well I'm hesitant to spend too much and not get 100% of the performance I'm paying for. My previous comp I had 8 or so years ago I spent 400$ on a 4800 and about 300$ on the CPU/MB/RAM combo. Needs less to say I didn't spend wisely. If the card will last me a year or 2 than I'm willing to spend 200$ and if I can use it longer than I can go 300$.

@caqde Its for gaming. Well usually I give my old comp to a family member or sell it cheap to a friend, so buying a lot of new parts for an old PC worries me. Just buying a new GPU has me thinking, what will I be doing with the old one? trash it? or the hassle of selling it online and mailing it. :(

I'm considering these cards:
at 240$, EVGA SuperClocked GTX 760 2GB GDDR5 256-bit, 02G-P4-2765-KR
at 245$, EVGA GTX 760 2GB GDDR5 256bit, 02G-P4-2761-KR
Too much card for my setup ?

Thanks.

They will basically over time end up with a new computer as my old parts usually end up turning into a new computer for them. It is a lot easier on my pocket book to upgrade slowly over time than doing large upgrades all at once.

Well your system is fine, although new games are cpu hungry and you will need to upgrade the cpu soon. But for now the only thing you need to upgrade is the gpu. And the evga 760 sc is a great choice. But if you needed more performance a new mobo, cpu and another 760 and a well sli certified 650W PSU should give you a smooth 3 years of gaming.

Good luck !

See no reason not to upgrade to either the GTX760 or R9 280, both are capable enough at 1080 rez and should run off the existing PSU with no problems.
Only possible issue is the CPU, it's still a capable part but will benefit from a little overclocking, nothing extreme but if you can, or will, push it to about 3.4GHz it'll give the system a real boost.
FYI, I'm running a 3.4GHZ overclocked i5 750 (from 2.6GHz) +HD7950 (also OC'd to 950/1400 from 800/1250) on a single 1080 screen and it's good for high/ultra settings as long as I keep the AA low or off.
The R9 280 is a rebadged HD7950 Boost, which is technically a little quicker than my mildly OCd 7950 BTW.

Thanks again for all the advice people.

I going with the GPU now in a year or so get that MB/CPU upgrade grade and find a home for the old parts hopefully. Also will to try to find a safe OC for my CPU.
