Getting games to run at 4k resolution...

I have a question and any help would be appreciated. I recently purchased a cheap 4K TV and configured my laptop settings to output to 4k resolution. It looks beautiful, especially watching Youtube videos in native 4k. My TV even reads the resolution at 3840x2160. Yet, when I go to the settings of games supposedly capapble of running up to 4k resolution, it will only let me choose 1920x1080. I've tried Dirt 3, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Hitman Absolution, Metro Redux.

Just wondering...am I doing something wrong? Is there something else I need to be doing? Any help would be much appreciated, as I'm a relatively new PC gamer.

Hmm...are you just mirroring monitors rather than using only the external one? Try to set up the laptop to physically use ONLY the external output device (there usually is a Fn + F-key combination to switch between internal, external or mirror monitors), then force 30hz operation in your windows' monitor settings and set 4k as your native resolution.

Check if games offer you the possibility of setting 4k afterwards.

Does your laptop feature a discrete video card as well? If so, Nvidia Optimus / AMD Enduro could be switching to the discrete card once a game launches, and the discrete card maybe doesn't support anything higher than 1920x1080.
AFAIK, Intel HD 3000 /4000, and I'm not too well informed but I believe some AMD APUs also do too, all support 4k resolution.

I have a 3GB Nvidia GTX 770M. It's able to output in 4k and I've watched videos in 4k but the games won't let me choose it. So Bioshock, Metro, etc, should have a 3840x2160 option, correct?

And I'm sorry, in discrete card, do you mean the Intel card that's built in?

The discrete card is the 770m you just mentioned :) the integrated one is the built-in Intel HD.

Are you using an HDMI/VGA cable to output the video signal to your [strike]projector[/strike] TV? AFAIK, the only cables that can transfer 4k properly are Dual Link DVI and DisplayPort, although some HDMI cables can get up there at lower framerates.

[strike]And moreover, does your projector support 4k too?[/strike]
Edit: don't ask why I went on with a projector when you got a TV....

Another thing that came to mind. Is any setting from the Nvidia control panel applying any upscaling to applications? If so, disable those options.

If you're outputting to the TV via a VGA cable, then you won't get 4K resolution. If you're outputting to the TV via HDMI, you need at least v1.4 for 4K resolution and even then, you'll be limited to 30 fps. HDMI 2.0 is the latest standard and supports up to 60 fps, but very few devices support it.

Yes, I'm using HDMI 1.4. As said, I am outputting in 4k, but the in-game options are only showing up to 1080p as choices. My TV is showing the input at 4k so it's obviously capable of running the resolution. The games look really amazing, just frustrating I can't get the in-game graphics settings to increase.
