This is what I have currently and I would like to begin upgrading and building a decent gaming pc. Obviously on a budget and would like to get a part each pay check. I would also like to reuse any of the hardware I have in my computer now that will still be effective.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.3GHz

Motherboard: IPISB-CU (Carmel2)

GPU: Geforce 9800 GT

Ram: 2 x 4 GB DDR3-1333 Speed: PC3-10600 MB/sec

HDD: 1TB SATA 7200RPM

Case: Willing to get a new case

PSU: 400w

Alright I think I might have a build that may work. Please provide a budget.

If you were to build, I will keep the RAM, HDD and maybe the power supply if you are not gaming or overclocking.

What PSU exactly? Upgrade GPU and PSU first, then the CPU at a later date.

Thanks. Right now I dont have a set budget I am looking to do some light gaming and as long as each piece is reasonable I will consider them. I did just do a build online for compatibility and kept my original hardware while adding:

Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER-U3

Motherboard: ASRock Z75 Pro3 LGA 1155 Intel Z75

It would be a start. Then I could continue to use my computer and upgrade GPU and PSU next. What do you think?

Yes if you plan to upgrade one by one is fine. That's what most people do if they dint have the money yet. So forget about the GPU first get the CPU, mobo and that's about it for now. Provide a budget for these two please.
