Graphics cards dropping like flies

I'm building a computer for a friend, using some second hand parts from another friend who I built a computer for. The motherboard, CPU, GPU and PSU are all second hand parts. So I pop the computer together without any problems but then around half an hour later it just goes off and I can't get a signal on the display. Eventually I work out that the graphics card just isn't being detected anymore and it's defaulting to integrated graphics. This doesn't happen when I pop an old card in so I just assumed the card had died somehow.

Anyway the guy who I'm building it for decided to get another graphics card (660ti) second hand from another friend. So I get that in and I've finished installing all the Nvidia drivers etc, then do a restart. BAM! No display. This time a series of beeps occurs with this card and it doesn't default back to integrated. Again, everything is fine when I pop an old card in I have laying around.

Neither card works in my desktop so they are definitely both gone, but what on earth could be causing it? The PSU is a cheap brand (CIT 650W) and the motherboard is a low-end gigabit one but both worked fine before.

Solution
get a new powersupply. what is the old card you keep using that is working fine? most likely I doesn't draw a lot of power and the pci-x cable is fine, when you put in the newer cards they draw to much power that the cheap PSU cant handle and somehow damages the cards.

The Beeps that you heard are codes from your BIOS. Restart your computer write down the beep code. It is very important that you write down the correct beep code because there is a difference between two beeps and four beeps. Then, find your manufacturer then look up what the beep code corresponds to.
