I bought a pair of g skills ripjaws x 2x4gb ram clocked at 2133 mhz 9-11-11-31 for my little brother. Without thinking properly i forgot that i only got him a h81 chipset, can i under volt the ram to 1600mhz with that type of chip set?

My back up plan is to give him my corsair vengence 2x4gb 1600 mhz 9-9-9-24, and ill take the g skills.

I also was wondering which ram is better, i dont understand timing for RAM.

Solution
You can simply configure the 2133MHz RAM to run at 1600MHz in the BIOS. You may have to play with the timings a little to get it stable.

In that case you might as well give him the Corsairs though, it'll run at the same speed and almost if not entirely the same timings. That way you'll get to use that higher speed RAM fully in your own system.

well its good to know that a h81 can at least do that, my corsairs have better timings though, what is better, 2133mhz or better timed 1600mhz?

What is the proper way of "downclocking"? Is it as complicated as fiddling around with CPU voltages?

I missed the H81 part.
The H81 chipset doesn't support overclocking at all. The best you can do is activating a XMP profile I believe. No down- or overclocking to be done there. Also, if you activate the G.Skills XMP on a H81 board the BIOS will put them at 1600MHz, not at 2133MHz.

I'd really recommend just giving your brother the Corsairs in this case, just activate the XMP profile and you're good to go.

I'm unfamiliar with what a xmp is and what it does. My corsairs are 1600 mhz which is supported with his h81 mobo, do i still need to set one p for him if i give him my corsairs?

XMP stands for eXtreme Memory Profile. It comes with the sticks and contains all the information necessary to set the RAM to it's advertised speed, voltage and timings.

In the case of 1600MHz RAM the speed may be programmed directly into the sticks (ie the mobo will automatically set it to 1600MHz) but otherwise it will default to 1333MHz 9-9-9-24. In that case you can go into the BIOS, where there should be an XMP option. It should be easy to find in a limited BIOS like the H81's. Select it, and the RAM will automatically be set to the right frequency, voltage and timings. It's really easy, you won't need to do anything else.

I understand, thats a very good explaination, but you're saying i cannot do that with the g skills 2133 with the h81 mobo?

You can set the XMP but the H81 chipset will detect that it's above the maximum "safe" frequency and put it back to the highest supported frequency, which is 1600MHz. That's because 1600MHz+ RAM is considered overclocked, and H81 doesn't like overclocking.

No, you simply go to the DRAM area and manually set the freq and the base timings you want them to run at

You can't do that with an H81 chipset.

EDIT: Look at Note 1: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81%20Pro%20BTC/?cat=Memory
Might be a different board but it states it's chipset related.

Thank you for clarifying that for us, very helpful to know.
