Sorry for the very late answer first of all - sparetime is pretty much a word that is unknown on wednesdays :p

Well, then i have a list of things for you to do:
1. Check the cpu temp, if the temps are in 75c or higher(when gaming, 75 is kinda expected from programs made for stress), you should concider better cooling.
2. Gpu temperature - do this with MSI afterburner
3. Gpu memory usage - again with MSI Afterburner
4. Gpu usage - when you get the spikes, quickly look for any load going from say 98/100% down to anything less.
5. Gpu Core clock - When it spikes, just as the usage, check for any dips below the usual "stable" speed.

And then a questions - when replying please reply in the same way i wrote this message.

What cpu have you got?

I have the same thing, but in other more cpu intensive games, such as modded skyrim. If it is a total freeze, and shortly after, very bad framerate, it is your cpu not being good enough to drive the game.

The harddrive is potentially also doing it, but from the picture you linked, my bet would be on the cpu.

Taken directly from http://bf3blog.com/battlefield-3-system-requirements/

Minimum requirements for Battlefield 3

OS: Windows Vista or Windows 7
Processor: Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or Althon X2 2.7 GHz
RAM: 2GB
Graphic card: DirectX 10 or 11 compatible Nvidia or AMD ATI card, ATI Radeon 3870 or higher, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher.
Graphics card memory: 512 MB
Sound card: DirectX compatibl sound card
Hard drive: 15 GB for disc version or 10 GB for digital version

So you should be fine. I still think the cpu is running too high in usage though, can you possibly check if anything is running in the backround other than bf3? Just to confirm that there is nothing "weird" running in the background eating up resources.

1) When was the last time you defragged your harddrive?
2) When did you reset your pc last time?
3) Is any weird noises coming from the harddrive
4) Is there a weird smell inside your pc, or potentially smoke? - turn off if it comes from the powersupply, and replace ASAP.

So testing was marked by x. - 1. or 2.
and questions marked by x) - 1) or 2)
