HI,

new build which never restarts properly, windows closes down and i receive a black screen, the lights and fans also stay on. once cold rebooted everything works as it should with no error messages from windows. i have done the following, disabled on-board graphics, cleared CMOS and removed the battery. As a test i tried to reboot from the BIOS after making the above changes, same problem. if i do a shutdown from windows it works fine, so it would lead me to believe there is no problems with the OS? Specs below:

i7 4790k
Corsair Hydro Series H55 All-In-One Liquid Cooler
Kingston Technology XMP Beast Series 16GB 2400MHz
Corsair RM850 (gold) PSU
MSI Z87-G45-GAMING ATX Motherboard
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive
2x WD 1TB 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue
Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 Jetstream 4GB GDDR5

any help would be highly appreciated

Solution
My PC would never restart but had no problem starting from a cold boot. A BIOS update fixed it even though it went against my better judgement since nowhere was that problem mentioned in any of the available updates' information pages.

But since all my hardware checked out okay, flashing the BIOS was the only thing left to try.

Thanks i will give that a go, i did try via the MSI live updater, but i don't know if it was successful or not

one other issue will be old anti virus or older program that wont end when you hit reset and locks the system up. try booting into safe mode f8 and see if windows shuts down fine. if it does use msconfig turn off stuff in start up and see if windows reset fine.

thank you, but i cannot see this being windows related as it happens after a reboot from bios as well, i will give it a try anyway

DO NOT use MSI Live Update to flash your BIOS, EVER! This is a very good way to brick your mobo.

Ok is there a better tool to
Do it? Can safely say I have never needed to.

Thanks

There are 2 other methods:
1) "M-Flash" option from within the mobo's BIOS. Although safer than Live Update, this method has also been known to brick some MSI mobos. I have used it a couple of times and didn't have any problems with it. The last time that I tried it, it just would not work with the new BIOS file that I was trying to flash. Instructions for this method should be in the mobo's manual.

2) "MSI User to User HQ Forum Flash Tool". This is the safest method as it will flash from a USB flash drive using DOS. The only drawback is the fact that you need to join the MSI User Forum to gain access to the flashing tools: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php
Once that you have become a member of the forum, go to this thread and D/L your mobo's BIOS file: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=163900.0
Next go to this page on the MSI User Forum and get the flash tool: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.msg800577#msg800577
Follow the directions to make a bootable USB flash drive. It can look rather intimidating at first, but it is actually pretty simple.

Good luck!
