matte 1440p 27in display causing eye strain?

Hi! I recently purchased a 27-inch 1440p semi-glossy display, and so far editing text on this monitor has caused much more eye strain than on the old 23-inch 1080p glossy display. I wonder if anyone has experienced this or can offer some solutions?

I know that the text is smaller on 1440p/27in than 1080p/23in, but the PPI difference is not that huge: 108ppi vs 96ppi. Besides, my laptop is 1366*768 at 14 inch (PPI = 112) and has the highest PPI, but I can work on my laptop for hours without a sweat. My laptop is also glossy.

So I wonder if it's a matter of glossy vs matte, or more concrete, the presence or lack of reflections. For a glossy screen, I do see reflections all the time, but I felt that provides a chance for my eyes to reflex, i.e. looking at something in a distance. Put it in another way, my eyes can alternate between near and far objects. For a matte screen without reflections, my eyes can focus only on the one bright object in front me (screen), building up strain over a much shorter period of time.

I just want to know if anyone has experience something similar transitioning from 1080p to 1440p, if there's really a difference between matte vs glossy, or is it just due to the decrease in font size.

Thanks!

It is probably just the decrease in font size. If you are a Windows 7 user, you could go to Windows 8 for native scaling features. There might be programs you could use in Windows 7. You are editing fonts? I suppose using Large Fonts in Win 7 is out of the question when it comes to editing?

Thanks for the reply! I'll try the larger fonts in win 7, although is there a way to scale only the external monitor? Still doesn't completely make sense, since the PPI on my laptop is higher than even the 27in 1440p monitor. Well, I guess I'll play with the scaling and resolution setting...

Now I am wondering if the reason lies in the AG coating. My old 23'' monitor is glossy, it does reflect, but the text is crystal clear. The new monitor (27") has a very light matte coating, but if you look closely and carefully while dragging a white object (window) across the screen, you can still see the effect of the coating. Could this tiny bit of blurriness/misty grain be causing the eye strain? Could anyone confirm this?

no it's mostly likely not because of the reduced font. I switched back to the 23'' 1080p and used a really small font to read text. 2 hour so far and no problem at all. I think with the new 1440p monitor it's either the matte coating that randomly scatters the light or dithering (8 bit+FRC). Dithering is kind of like flickering.
