Searching for a cpu cooler.

Hi, I was wondering if there was a cpu cooler for am3+ that would fit on the same bracket that the stock one would fit on? The only reason I ask this is because I have an old unbranded case, I don't know what will fit in it. I need to OC because I want to live stream DayZ, and I lag too much, it's pretty pothetic. But DayZ won't use all of the cores. So, I guess I need to make the ones that it does use, faster. Thank you. Here are my specs: CPU = AMD FX 6300

MB = Asus M5A97 R2.0

RAM = 8GB Crucial Ballistix 1600MHz

GPU = Gigabyte R9 280 3GB

PSU = Antec HCG 900W

CASE = Unbranded

STORAGE = PNY XLR8 120GB SSD + Seagate Barracuda 250GB HDD + Seagate 160GB HDD

Dont be :) you have a pretty nice gaming system there, r9 280 can handle most if not all games at 1080P right now, and that cpu its perfect for gaming. Of course you shouldve though in the streaming performance before, but its recording the game that importing? think about it, dont regret decisions you made :) thats a advice for life.

You really shouldn't go through the trouble. DayZ is horribly optimized and the performance difference will probably be negligible. Unless you have some sort of clearance measurements for the CPU cooler height then I really can't recommend a heatsink. If you really feel the need to OCand are not sure about HSF clearance, you could just get a liquid cooler and mount in in a fan mount

i currently use the hyper 212 evo cooler on my fx-6300 and find it is an incredible value. I can overclock it to 4.5 ghz without worrying about temperature or instability; it fits am3+ sockets right out of the box and doesnt take up a very large amount of space although im not sure of the dimensions of your case i would recommend measuring the depth of it. I dont know of many other cpu coolers as i went with price per performance on my build and therefore there wasnt many options for me.

I know it's not optimized for crap, but it just really irritates me that I can't play and record it like my friends do with i7's, and I just bought the cpu+mobo last month. I got the R9 280 yesterday thinking it would let me record, but NOPE. I just don't know what to do now. Thanks for your reply!

I think I have a little less that 7 inches from the door of the case, about 8 from the back fans to the hdd cage, and less the 7 between my psu and gpu.

Well live streming its cpu dependent so your friends with I7 get better performance at it, but a FX 6300 its perfectly fine for gaming, and as someone already said that game is poorly optimized :)
Measure the case and get the EVO if it can fit, if not and you really want a cooler, then you need to go for liquid coolers.

Thanks for your time, I am just really disappointed in the $420 I'vs spent on parts in the past 2 months.

Hmm. Well that number will decrease significantly when you get the actual mounting gear and stuff installed. So... I'm not sure. A small cooler that will probably allow you to OC would be the Noctua NH-U9B SE2 though I'm not sure how much it will let you. If all else fails you can try to return/sell/RMA your 6300 and get an 8350 because 8350's seem to be great for streaming/recording.

How would I return it and get my money back, if it has no problems?

You can RMA it and say there was something wrong with it, but I don't think yours has anything wrong with it

Glad we all helped, and to rma you had to hsve a defective component, which your 6300 isnt right?
You can allways try to sell it to a friend at a decent price, like 85% the price you got it, only has 2 months of use and couple years of warranty :)

Holy American prices Batman!

If I were you I'd get an FX 8350. It performs much better than the 4690k when it comes to recording/streaming. If you are NOT overclocking, the ABSOLUTE best bang for your buck would be to get the Intel Xeon E3 1230v3 which is basically an i7-4770 without integrated graphics and priced the same as an i5-4670. It also has hyperthreading which would help a lot, and by buying a cheaper CPU (And a cheaper mobo because Z97 is for OCing) you'd save a lot of money which you put towards something else. But that still is an amazing build for $900. My Canadian self is envious

lol I know I had to look at it again after I put it together. It's a great deal, and with using NCIX I have NO TAX to pay, and free shipping. I want to get Intel because, well every game I play runs better on Intel. I will only be able to get this if I can get someone to buy mine. Also, I will be overclocking when I need to. But you think that build is, um super amazing for the price? Like being able to Stream and record, whilst getting good playable frames, or just stream and get the footage from Twitch?

I think that build is all-around good for the price. I know that games run better on Intel, there's no denying that, but streaming/recording will eat that Intel alive while the FX 8350 will laugh at it. If you were just gaming and doing only that then I'd recommend the 4690k in a heartbeat, but for streaming and gaming, I'd have to recommend the 8350

Hyperthreading would help with streaming and recording, correct? How would that Xeon hold up? Would I be able to go a while since there is no overclocking?

That Xeon would probably be your best option when it comes to price/performance. The E3-1230v3 is basically an i7-3770K but without overclocking and integrated graphics (IGPU is pointless because you're going to be using an R9 280 anyways). Hyperthreading should also help a lot in streaming/recording and such. You're basically getting an i7 at an i5 price point.

But how would it hold up without overclocking? That means I can't OC at all correct? I could probably OC the shit out of that I5. lol
