Hi,

I have an old family computer that is sat gathering dust due to the rise of the iPad in our household. I'm looking to convert it into a home media system with XBMC in order to view Netflix and YouTube through it.

I've hooked up the computer to my HDTV via a VGA connection and the picture quality is pretty poor, and with the plan for this to be a media centre I obviously want picture quality to be excellent.

The computer is a Packard Bell IMAX X3515. I am not expecting anything amazing from this machine, it will not be used for gaming, I just want a decent HD picture on my TV screen. I'm looking at adding a graphics card with a HDMI output as at the moment the current graphics card (nvidia geforce 7050 256mb) only has VGA output. The motherboard is a Packardbell BV APL00 with an intel core 2 quad Q6600 2.41 ghz CPU. The PSU is rated at 350W.

What would be the best way to upgrade this machine for my intended purpose? I'm also not looking to break the bank with this upgrade either.

I've tampered with the insides of PCs before such as upgrading RAM and adding more hard drives, wouldn't say I'm an expert but I'm not a total idiot either, I hope. So I think I should be able to upgrade a graphics card with a little guidance.

Thanks in advance

If you have q6600 and at least 2gb of ram , then the only thing you shall upgrade is your graphics card. Get the cheapest one with HDMI output and it will do the job. Don't spend too much, as it wont make any difference for your needs

I've found a HD6450 for a £1 cheaper so going with that instead!

Would there be any benefit in going up to 4gb RAM? It is capable of doing this and then I could install a 64 bit version of windows....... I don't know if I'm just adding pointless things now though, I'm only going to use it for watching films.

It wont make any difference. Get the graphics card and test it. If you are okay with the result, there's no reason for spending extra money...
