How straightforward is overclocking

I planning on getting a new z97 motherboard and a K processor and I was wondering how I would go about overclocking the CPU

And does the higher clock speed increase the performance significantly ?

Solution
Cons29 pretty much said it all, except the actual steps to OC your CPU. It's really difficult to explain it with text so...
Here's a good Intel OC'ing guide:

Also here is OC performance in some recent games:

Some CPU heavy games gain a lot of FPS from OC'ing (Crysis 3, Arma 3), others games mainly rely on GPU power and OC'ing doesn't help at all (BF4, Watch dogs).
first off, it is easier now because you don't have to worry about fsb ratio (and other related things)
but voltage adjustments are still there. basic OC are easy enough (light oc only) where you could get away with "AUTO" settings for almost everything.

for higher clocks however, it will require reading (or watching) guides. for your other question, yes it adds good performance. things will get hotter though so invest on decent cooling (stock heatsink won't cut it)

either way, always spend time on stress testing (these consume several hours)

just a few things, monitor your temps, and CHECK FIRST the MAX voltages so you dont end up frying anything. test test and test. be patient, there is no magic number here, don't just jump to 5ghz. take it slow esp if you don't know what you are doing.
i am not an expert though, so read around

How is the light overclocking done and how do you get things on auto settings ? I would be happy with a light oc , am just trying to take advantage of my motherboard and CPU, get a little more performance increase

most of the settings on a board (unless you changed them) are set on auto. check it and see for yourself. also, save your settings (good boards have at least 2 slots for saving your current settings)

^yep, it is not easy to explain here. and besides, there are literally tons of guides already , just google. and they know better than we do.
are you on stock cooler?

do some reading, it's worth the time
