Replacing failing network adapter

I have been through a litany of tests and determined that I need to replace my network adapter. How do I know which one of the many available online is the correct (compatible) one to purchase? Thanks in advance!

Any adapter should work.

If you have a free PCI slot you can buy a PCI wired/wireless network card.

If you don't you can get a wired/wireless USB network card.
