my 1tb wd passport shows as "local disk f:". previous volume label was either "G:" or "H:" . I tried opening disk management but it gets stuck in "connecting to virtual disk service". I plugged it in another computer, it shows as RAW drive( after a lot of waiting...20 mins maybe) but i cant change drive paths or letters(becuase the computer freezers and windows explorer stops). i tried sfc /scannow, also went to services and changed the properties of virtual disk to "Allow service to interact with desktop" but nothing happened. Disk management takes lots of time to load. I dont think it is a hardware issue since i have never dropped it or anything. the last time device ran fine i had checked "scan and fix error ". I have uninstalled drivers, formatted my pc, tried all recovery software. (like ease us , recuva... i think these are used after solving the RAW data issues??)
I think data is still there, since i had plugged my passport to my tv and it loaded the usb drive showing all files in it (but the tv freezed too). I have tried changing the usb cable, using usb adapter but nope it didnt solve anything. i bought it 1 year ago. i have not formatted nor overwritten any data over it.
I tried running windows memory diagnostic and the pc freezers. I Ran testdisk on windows but the cmd interface gets stuck on "please wait... "
I cannot run chkdsk as it does nothing.
Tried running data lifeguard diagnostic for windows but the window only show after i unplugged the drive.
( the only reason i didnt unplugged safely was my pc was restarting too much that i had to change the pc fan and also the silicon chip... faulty old chip...i have formatted my PC though and installed all the pc drivers ) my os is windows 7, 32 bit
I am about to use Linux bootcd to repair with testdisk in it, thats my last resort. Nothing else worked.
My data is worth the trouble. ( if bootcd doesnt work , i ll drop wd passport from top of a building, go down and step and jump in it or smash it with hammer and vow never to buy wd products again)
My os is windows 7 32 bit.

try running paragon partition recovery....use the superscan option. after it "see" the partition and files you can try and recover them.

Hi there prchapagain,

I am really sorry for the frustration that your WD Passport is causing you. You've done some extensive troubleshooting though.

No matter the brand of the drive or whether is brand new or not, the RAW file system issue occurs most of the times after unsafe ejection, though not only then. Sometimes a drive plugged in a TV automatically formats the file system. This could be another cause of file system issues.

As the data stored on the device is important, and if the bootcd does not work, I would say that your safest bet is to use some professional help.

Here is a link to WD's Data Recovery Parners: http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?lang=en&selre...

Hope this will help,
