Hi guys,

Recently installed my new graphics card (MSI 780 ti Twin Frozr) and it has 1 x 8 pin plug and 1 x 6 pin plug, but my EVGA 850W G2 only has 2 x 6 pin + 2 pin, the way i got round this was to plug one of the 6 pins into the GPU then connect the other 6 pin into the supplied 6 - 8 pin adapter, i then ignored the 2 pin connector.

Would it be better for me to plug the 6 + 2 pin into the 8 pin connector instead of using the 6 - 8 pin adapter? I just read that the latter may not send quite enough power to the GPU.

Thanks

The way you'd want to do is to connect the 6+2 into the 8 pin connector and in the 6 Pin connector connect 6 pins ( the 6 pins which are attached together ) and leave the other 2 pins hanging around.

You should plug both 6+2 cables from the PSU into the GPU, with the 2-pin pigtail from one of them unused - you can just tuck that out of the way. You shouldn't need the adapter. The pigtailed two pin part is what tells the PSU that it's okay to push 150W down that connection instead of the usual 75W for the 6-pin connector.

Thanks for the replies.

Not sure I made myself 100% clear though, I have 2 x 6 pin and 1 x 2 pin coming from the PSU so if I connect the 6 + 2 to the 8 pin and connect the 6 pin to the 6 pin that will leave me with no connectors left (maybe the way I worded it made it sound like I had 2 x 2 pins) this is no problem I was just confused when you said I’d have a 2 pin left, want to make sure we're on the same page. :p

So I’ll remove the adapter and instead combine the 2 pin and 6 pin into the 8 pin connector, will giving my graphics card more power improve the performance in any way?

Probably wont improve performance, but its the correct way to connect it.

Excellent, thank you.

At the very least it's always nice to get rid of an unneeded cable from the system. :)
