CPU very Hot

Hey Guys,

My Graphics Card recently died. I got the brand new GPU by RMA

But then I have found out that the PC shuts down automatically after 3-4 minutes of playing games.
I checked the temperature of CPU :
After boot up : 40-41C and during playing games it goes to 80+ and that's where I think the PC shuts down.
Under normal operation, PC works fine. It only shuts down when i play some intensive games

Now I'm really surprised to find such high temps for the CPU. Prior to my GPU dying, i use to get Idle CPU temp of about 31-33C and 50-52 under load. How come suddenly the CPU is getting very hot

Could you please help me with giving the reason for it.
Also appreciate the solution { hardware / software(doubt it) }

The GPU probably died because of the bad PSU.
The Corsair CX series of PSUs uses really cheap capacitors that can't output the power they state they can(600W in your case) for a long period of time. When you do intensive games, the 280X consumes a lot of power. The CX isn't able to give the amount of power the 280X needs and eventually, the GPU will die.
You will probably need a new PSU and a new GPU.
Tier One,Tier Two Class A and Class B are recommended:

Make sure that you're using enough watts for your system:

And also, let's hope that none of the other components are damaged.
All the best. ;)

My GPU was damaged while moving the PC. I don't think the problem is with PSU.I have been gaming heavily previously and never faced any issues.
Issue currently is due to the high CPU temps .
Any suggestions on the cooler front

Only changed the Graphics Card. I'm still using the same old CPU FX-8320.
No idea about the thermal though. Why and How to use it ?

You need the thermal paste (which is located between the CPU and the Cooler) for dragging the heat from the CPU to the Cooler, so your CPU will not warm up too much.

I know this maybe sounds weird, but the new GPU is bigger than the older one?

And if yes, how much is your PC Case size? Maybe it could be a ventilation problem, and with the new graphic card the CPU cannot cool down as it did before.

He has a Corsair 300R,so I don't think that the airflow/ventilation is the problem. ;)

It is same GPU, just got brand new after RMA'd. :)

Any ideas on the thermal paste options and which are the good ones and economical

I purchased the Antec Formula 7 diamond compound thermal grease from Best Buy and my CPU idle temps dropped from the mid 50s to the mid 40s and gaming temps fell from the lower 80s to lower 70s. It comes with a spreader tool and the compound is very thick, but it does what it's intended to do nicely.

It's a guess, but if the gpu got damaged by taking a hit when moving, chances are that it was also enough to release or move the cpu cooler in its bracket a bit. I would try to check out whether that's the case.
Sure, you want to take the cooler off, check it for damage and reseat it properly once you get that thermal compound eventually. But for now, IF NOTHING IS OBVIOUSLY WRONG AND NO BRUTE FORCE IS NEEDED, it might just be enough to refasten the cooler without actually taking it off

Hey Guys,
sorry for the late reply. was out on a weekend.
So the latest update on PC is :-
I got the PC working up after my friend applied some thermal paste on CPU.
But still the CPU gets to heat up lot ~70-74 C when playing games like Far Cry3. i was able to play the game for a day.
When i resumed to start the PC yesterday, again the same issue is coming up. These is no video output coming up on the TV. This was the same issue I had with the my previous Graphics card and then I got it replaced with a new one.
I'm really worried now whether again the new Graphics card got damaged or is there an other issue with electricals / in some other part of PC.

I also think so it is a MB problem.
Just a final check i'll do to check whether the new Graphics Card works with other Motherboard.

and yes, i have all the system under warranty

The PC is not showing any video as of now.
So will be able to check the using BIOS or CPU-z once i sort out this issue
