What could be causing this freezing problem?

Hi. Lately I've been having a lot of freezing problems and I don't know what could be causing it. When I first turn on my computer everything freezes a lot for about 20 minutes, and opening a new tab in Chrome during this time stalls the whole program for about 10 seconds. The problem restarts when I try to record a video, the game freezes a lot and even after I stop recording, the Chrome thing starts happening again. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Hi JoM9,
I think some more information would be helpful first mate. What is your OS, quick specs (CPU, Ram, Hard drives/ssds), other problems noted (anything else misbehaving?), etc.

This is some info that can help immediately identify a problem. Otherwise we shall go from there. :)

Something I should also maybe note, every 20 or so minutes I hear what I think is one of my hard drives shutting down and when I open a file on it, it sounds like it starts back up before the file opens.

I think you've answered your own question :) . Drive Q, what is that? Are you by any chance missing a hard drive from the "my computer" window? That sound combined with mystery drive Q, could be a failed hard drive that is trying to spin up but is failing for some reason.

Oh well that is a hidden partition for MS Office products on your pc (lots of vendors do this). Have you run a chkdsk on your computer recently?

Start a command prompt (Windows key + R) and type cmd to bring up the black windows command prompt.
Type the following in: chkdsk C: /f /r /x
and then hit enter. This will run chkdsk (check disk) on your C: drive and attempt to repair any damage as well as hunt for bad sectors. After this completes (it may take a long time especially if there really is a problem) run the same command but this time replace C: with F: to check your F: hard drive next.

This means chkdsk has found a problem at that address. It will continue to attempt repairs. It is possible they are unrecoverable in which case chkdsk will try to find a way to reallocate. I would suggest being patient with it (I know its a computer and supposed to be fast :p ) but it could have found the problem sector and may be able to fix it!!! :)

Sorry for late response, was moving house and didn't have internet for a while. I performed chkdsk on both drives and it didn't seem to help.

Have you added a video card to this machine? Its a long stretch but bad drivers could be causing some of this. The part that really stumps me is how its affecting Chrome only and the game recording. What about plugins/addons? Any recent additions or updates seem to have caused the problem to occur?

It's not affecting Chrome and game recording only, it affects the whole computer. I meant sometimes when I open a new tab in Chrome I can still switch between windows but all the programs are unresponsive.
