I am currently building a gaming pc for myself, and have everything to the best of my knowledge set up correctly. however, the graphics card i have (gigabyte radeon r9 280 3gb gddr5) has two power ports, one is a 6 pin, the other is an 8 pin. only the 8 pin pci cord from the power supply fits in the back of the graphics card. the other i used a 4 pin to 8 pin adapter that came with the card. when i hooked up to power and connected the hdmi to the tv, nothing shows up on the screen. all components in the tower are working it seems, but i get no display.

Get a splitter for the 8-pins connector and plug in both into the graphics card. For 6-pins, disengage (or separate) the 2-pins from the 8-pins end.

What's the make and model of your psu? Not having the proper ports is usually a sign that the psu can't properly power the card.
