Headset Microphone Keeps Disabling Itself (PC-side issue, not the headset)?

Firstly I apologise if this is in the wrong section as it could be a hardware or a software issue, so I just put it under 'general connectivity'.

I own a Turtle Beach Z22 headset designed for PC usage, it features a USB cable for headset power and a standard 3.5mm mic jack for the microphone. I currently have the headset cables plugged into the back of my PC through the motherboard sockets, as opposed to the front USB/mic jack on my PC's case.

Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme 4
PC Case: Fractal Design Define R4

About 3-4 months ago I noticed my microphone would stop working from time to time. In my recording devices in Windows 8.1 the mic would still be set to default and enabled, but when I spoke the volume bar didn't have any activity (the mic definitely isn't on mute either). I tried plugging the headset into the front ports on my PC case and for about 10 minutes everything worked fine, but then the mic stopped working again. When I go back and plug the headset into the back of the PC once more, everything works fine again, but this time it'll stop working after about 2-3 hours.

I have no idea what's causing the problems. As far as I'm aware my drivers are up to date for the motherboard and headset, and the headset works fine on other computers.

Sorry for the long post, any suggestions?
